Gold and Garnet Ring – Work In Progress
Materials: garnet, handcrafted gold alloys
This ring explores the interplay between natural and human-made forms.
The garnet was mined in Malaya. Its body encapsulates the geologic forces that formed it within the Earth and it bears marks from the hands and picks of the artisanal gemstone miners who pulled it from the ground and brought it to light. The provenance of gold is much harder to determine. Gold is in perpetual transit – remelted, reshaped, and reused as it moves through time and ownership.
The ring juxtaposes raw material forms: a bar of handcrafted and hand-forged 18kt green gold and a Malayan garnet. The hammer marks on metal and gemstone are physical traces of the human hands that worked these materials on opposite sides of the world.
The band is made from handcrafted and hand-forged 10kt pale yellow gold – an incredibly strong alloy that beautifully complements the softness of the 18kt green gold bar even as the soft lustre of the 10kt band offsets the brightness of its 18kt counterpart.
See Details for specifics about gems and metal (karat, color, weight).
